Juanón RuizPiece of mind for me, to me the best sounding Maiden album, apart from the fact that they are my all-time fave band. I love Slayer but that is not among my faves from them. Metallica? A great start but nothing to do against the album from Maiden.

John J C CarterAll of them. If I had heard SNM when I was 15, I'd have fallen in love with it on the spot - whereas I heard KEA and was lukewarm initially. At the time I only liked Sabbath and Maiden really. Started getting into Metallica and Megadeth, then just loads of bands after realising that this is an actual genre that I'm mostly going to like, and not just two standout bands amongst a load of empty nonsense rock and glam bands. BUT I got into Slayer via HA and RB, and never got SNM cos I figured it'd be even more primitive and badly-recorded (soundwise) than HA. I finally heard SNM when I was about 19 and couldn't believe it - it was pure glorious joy and beauty, like Iron Maiden crossed with Slayer or thrash. Loads of higher riffs and classic metal parts (e.g. Metal Storm), and melodic solos. Really stood on the boundary for me between emerging thrash and classic metal or NWOBHM. I love that album, it's too good to be real, the can't be permitted to make it this good, surely??? BTW if anyone's reading this and agrees, and likes heavy stuff, go and listen to Fearless Undead Machines by Deceased, the whole LP. Sounds nothing likd SNM but will have you pausing it in delight every 10 seconds whilst you try to locate someone to say ""Arrrgh listen to this right now!". Oddly enough Deceased drummer King Fowley saw Slayer on tour in '83 and they gave him the demo of HA to listen to in his car before the show. His fave track off SNM is Crionics (which I also love!).

Pascal SchoogBy the time of 83, it was definitely Maiden. Because I was biased a lot from the former „Number of the beast“ thing. Two years later it would have been Kill em all, for sure, as my taste went a bit more in the rough direction. Another two years later I would have gone for Slayers Show no mercy. Up to today, this is one of my favorite albums. SLAAAAYYYYYEEEEEERRRRRR! 🤘

John DemaineStart at the beginning. Black Sabbath and heavy reference to the 'proto metal' hard rock bands that helped to forge the sound.

Warren CastianoActually had a teacher that was metal. First thing he said was "You better practice what you preach". I was wearing a TestAmenT shirt. My favorite teacher ever.

John ClarkI would start with face painting. Kiss, King Diamond and Alice... kids love that shit. Parents hate it. Face paint Friday every Friday until I get sacked and become immortal as ‘our teacher that got sacked’.

Andy ArisI started my kids on Elvis, they've settled at Kiss so far (they're 7 and 6). Will start at Sabbath when they won't get scared of the intro to the first album

Neil CoxIt starts with the industrial sounds of the Midlands and the influences from the blues. The lesson ends with rain and a singular chiming bell followed by three immense power chords

Vladimir ViznerGreat question, I'd certainly mention Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer and even Stepenwolf in lesson #1, and they would lead Black Sabbath with mentions of other doom typebands around the same time. Sabbath for the heaviness and Motorhead for the speed.

Mike HodgesIt can't be taught. You either get it or you don't. Nobody could teach me Maths. I didn't get it. Some kids did, and fair play to them. And some poor bastards will never know quite what an overwhelming, wonderful feeling that is a natural love of music's greatest form. To get to the fucking point though and try to answer the question....play "Painkiller" by Judas Priest to the class. Those that turn the desks over, and throw the ones that don't out of the window, get straight A grades. 🤘

Frank BalintBeatles. Melodies, chord progressions and drum patterns, and let’s face it, sabbath, Motörhead etc were mostly influenced by the Beatles.

Adrian LendonI'd say sabbath but you could go back much further into the influences that shaped what sabbath did. Blues,jazz,60s psych bands, rock n roll...it's all in sabbaths sound.

Steven O'carrollThere wouldn't be only one per lesson, i love metal so i wouldn't be able to only give one band it would be easier to state which genre of metal I'd go for nwobhm would be my starting point

Matthew HopkinsI start with Iron Maiden and finish with Napalm Death including Acid Reign in the middle - all British Bands for this lesson.

Phillip PineI would start with early heavy forms of music. MC5, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, and of course Black Sabbath.
